Biography
Mary was born in 1810 to Reverend James Brown and Elizabeth Adams in Garvagh, County Antrim, Ireland. She was the sixth of nine children and the fourth daughter. Through their mothers, Mary and John Bones were first cousins.
John Bones met with his Brown relatives while visiting family in Ireland in 1834. In a letter to his brother at the beginning of August, John wrote that Mary was “a fine looking girl.” They married 25 September in Garvagh and arrived in Charleston, South Carolina, 10 November.
Mary was well loved by John’s family and by the family of his first wife, the Eves. John and Mary lived a happy life together. In addition to his business in town, the couple had a house in the Sand Hills area for the summers and other times.
In addition to frequent visits back to Ireland, three of Mary’s brothers immigrated to Augusta, Georgia. Once there, John took them in as business associates and partners. Following the death of Mary’s brother, William, John and Mary took in William’s children.
Mary died of “brain fever” on 6 February 1865 and was buried in Cottage Cemetery.
