James Colgon Campbell was the third child of James Campbell and Grace Colgon, born in Randalstown, County Antrim, Ireland (today, Northern Ireland). He immigrated to Georgia before 1818, when he married Mary Roma Eve, eldest daughter of Joseph and Hannah (Singleterry) Eve, on 8 April 1818 at her uncle’s home, Forrest Hall, near Augusta, Georgia. Her cousin, Maria Fitzsimons Eve, married John Bones at the same event.

The couple made their home in Augusta and Savannah, Georgia. They had three sons: Robert Joseph Campbell (1820-1825), Henry Fraser Campbell (1824-1891), and Robert C. Campbell (1826-1885). The later two attended Augusta Medical College, co-founded by their uncle, Dr. Joseph Eve, and went on to become distinguished and well-respected doctors.

James died 19 March 1826 in Augusta, Georgia.
